The starting point
A memory or reasoning exercise should be judged against the task you actually want to perform. Keep a concrete example outside the training exercise so you can distinguish learning the game from becoming more capable in daily life.
What is hypothetical
This discussion of workplace and societal expectations includes a design scenario from the manuscript. Read proposed capabilities conditionally. A real product would need evidence for its exact use, a clear account of errors and limitations, and meaningful control for the person using it. An engaging demonstration alone would not establish a health or learning benefit.
Workplace and Societal Expectations
There’s also the potential for cognitive training to become another metric of performance in professional and academic environments. Just as some employers now expect digital literacy, future employers might expect employees to engage in regular cognitive training. While this could lead to a more effective workforce, it may also add pressure on individuals to “keep up” mentally, with cognitive training as a new, unspoken requirement.
A concrete way to think about it
Before making a cognitive exercise part of a team routine, agree on the problem it is intended to solve. A score in a training game should not become a proxy for competence at work. Ask whether participation can be declined, whether individual results remain private, and whether an ordinary change in workload or tools would address the issue. Include people with different abilities in that discussion. A fair arrangement evaluates the work required and provides suitable support; it does not assume that every worker should adopt the same personal enhancement practice.
